External sector — official balance of payments

Overall balance

Current account plus capital account, less the financial account (net lending), plus net errors and omissions — the total that shows up as a change in reserves. Financial account is shown so that "up" means capital arriving, matching the chart below it.

Current account and its components

Goods, services, primary income (investment income and wages) and secondary income (transfers and remittances) sum to the current account.

Goods trade

Exports against imports; the gap between them is the trade balance.

Financial account

How the current account is financed. A negative direct-investment figure is a net inflow of foreign capital.

Reserves and import cover

Foreign exchange reserves, and how many months of goods imports they would pay for. Three months is the conventional adequacy floor.

Foreign direct investment

A separate BOL publication, broken down by sector and by source country — not part of the balance of payments above, though the sector total ties to its Direct Investment: Liabilities line. Uses the frequency selected above; monthly isn't published for FDI, so Quarterly is used instead.

Outlook mechanical projection, not a forecast

Extends the published series by repeating its seasonal pattern and recent trend. It knows nothing about policy, commodity prices or shocks — it is a baseline to measure surprises against, and the shaded band is where past projections of this series actually landed.

What the published data says

Computed from the figures above — each point names the numbers it rests on so it can be checked.

Economic outlook researched snapshot, not auto-updating

The mechanical projection above only sees the published numbers — it has no idea about debt negotiations, credit ratings or a new power line to China. This is different: a snapshot written from current reporting on Laos's economy, with real sources to check. A static, offline-capable page cannot call a news service or an AI model on its own, so unlike the data above this does not refresh itself — it reflects what was true when it was researched, and needs a person to update it again later.

One number worth flagging

How much of this does ITRS already capture?

BOP team compiles the real, published balance of payments from several sources — customs data for goods, surveys for parts of services, ITRS for cross-border bank transfers — so ITRS was never meant to be the whole picture on its own. This is that comparison anyway, using the same Goods / Services / Income classification the Weekly Report and Report tabs already use. The financial account (FDI, portfolio, other investment) isn't included — it carries a different sign convention that needs separate, careful handling.

Custom report builder

Pick what runs down the left, what runs across the top — normally the date range — and narrow the whole table to one country, currency, purpose or BOP item. Uses the period, bank, measure and basis chosen at the top.

Tick the tabs each person may see. Admin gets everything, plus data upload, settings and this page.
